Vietnam Street Food Tour – Rice Paper and Vietnamese Pizza

Prior to this trip I know about 1 or 2 types of Vietnamese rice paper. It is the one that we use to make summer rolls, that is very popular outside Vietnam. I learn about Vietnamese pizza in one of my FB groups. Now I am seeing how it is made and how it tastes.

As usual we are on the bike zooming away. We pass by the market, now we whizz through the market and stop somewhere and I get to taste all the various types of rice paper. There is plain, with sesame seeds, and even banana. It is all freshly made and wrapped in plastic and I can take home with me to enjoy in the hotel.

Then we whizz to the Vietnamese pizza stall. Of course the guide orders whatever she thinks is good for me.  I have a fascinating time watching how it is made.  The ladies do the work with such speed, spinning the rice paper around on the grill and adding the ingredients. This is what we call ‘fast hands’. At the same time, there is another hand fanning the flames with a palm fan. Not only that, we sit down on a little stool, around a little table, surrounded by stalls. It is great to feel like a local.

Fortunately, the place does not look too unhygienic. It is busy though, with many stalls around me. While waiting, I order the sugar cane water. It is made just like we do back in Malaysia. There is an added ingredient, though. It taste a bit different, and is refreshing. What is the ingredient and how does it taste like? Find out in the video.

Then comes the pizza, piping hot. It is not like the normal Italian pizza, in fact there is no cheese. The base is the rice paper and I suppose the pizza is gluten-free, if the ingredients used are gluten-free.  The rice paper is grilled over hot charcoal and the topping usually contains eggs as it holds all the ingredients together. There are eggs, mayo, onions, sausage and loads more.

The pizza does taste different and it is crispy! Thin and Crispy with loads of toppings and the base is not wet or soggy.  This is good. I love it. I must try this at home. The pizza is healthy as there is not high calorie cheese and it is grilled.

It is certainly an experience eating here. This place does not have a lot of tourists. So I suppose I have come to the right place!!

I have made some short videos for your viewing.
